6/13/2013 - Director of Children & Family Ministry - Overland Park

Valley View United Methodist Church in Overland Park has an opening for a part-time Director of Children and Family Ministry. The position reports to the senior pastor or co-pastors. Download a detailed job description here.

The director’s primary responsibility is for the development and implementation of the vision, strategy and tactical elements for all programs, activities and educational aspects related to ministry opportunities for children, newborn through 5th grade, and their families to grow in relationship with Christ.

Specifically, responsibilities include Sunday Morning ministries of Children’s Sunday School, Children’s Time, Nursery and Toddler Care, Parent Chat and Family Experience (FX); Other Weekday Ministry Events like Family Fun/Activity Nights; Special Seasonal Ministry Events such as Children’s Christmas Program; and Summer Ministries like Vacation Bible School and Summer Fun Days.

The director will relate to the ministries and oversee the directors of the nursery and childcare.

Skills and Competencies Needed:

  • The Children/Family Ministry Director should be able to communicate his/her own personal faith formation and knowledge of how to equip others to serve.
  • Previous background in working with children and/or family faith formation. A degree or evidence of educational credits in education, Christian Education, and/or spiritual formation would be a benefit.
  • Have an obvious working knowledge and familiarity with current trends in children’s ministry and/or elementary education
  • Have the ability to both lead and partner as a servant with volunteers and staff
  • Possess organizational skills necessary for preparation of materials and organization of events and meetings by agreed upon deadlines
  • Competency demonstrated in leadership skills and collaborative planning Committed to developing team relationships
  • Committed to Intergenerational Ministry
  • Support and integrate the vision for ministry of Valley View United Methodist Church to Experience, Grow, and Share the Love of Jesus to Make Disciples for the Transformation of the World
  • Provide references who can attest to each of these qualities

Valley View United Methodist Church has a worshipping congregation of nearly 400. Church facilities include a full, wood floor gymnasium and classroom space for the only program in the area licensed for Preschool, Day Care, and Parent’s Day Out. Two different, outstanding worship opportunities provide a draw for new families, as well.

Job Description for Director, St. Paul’s UMC Preschool and Children’s Day Out

Reports to: Pastor of Faith Formation
Directly Supervises: Preschool Teachers, Aides, Staff
Status: Less Than Full Time
FLSA: Exempt 
 
Job Summary
The Director of St. Pauls Preschool and Childrens Day Out will provide dynamic leadership and responsive oversight to the preschool program; articulating our particular vision of early childhood education to preschool families and staff. The Directors foremost task is to appreciate, maintain, and enhance what makes our program unique.
 
Essential Functions:
  • Develop curriculum and teaching methods that will encourage childrens natural curiosity, foster confidence in their own abilities, and develop a life-long love of learning.
  • Assist teachers and staff individually in creating and achieving professional goals so they will continue to enhance their skills.
  • Resource curriculum needs for teachers and provide assistance in assessing students needs.
  • Foster an environment that creates a team with teachers, staff, and parents.
  • Maintain open, consistent, and effective communication with parents.
  • Oversee daily operations of the preschool.
  • Assure that the facilities and the program are in 100% compliance with licensing regulations (as outlined by the Kansas Department of Health and Environment) and that staff maintains required credentials.
  • Provide strategic and administrative leadership for the preschool and its unique programs of Art, Music, Nature, and Spiritual Education by leading the effort to market that vision in the community and creating and executing an annual budget that allows for the implementation of that vision.
Other Responsibilities:
  • Participate in church staff meetings and Childrens Education Committee meetings, as appropriate.
  • In collaboration with the Pastor of Faith Formation, coordinate the use of shared space.
  • Network with other early childhood program directors in the community.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Associates Degree in Child Development or Early Childhood Education.
  • Two (2) years of classroom teaching experience in a licensed preschool. 
  • Demonstrated proficiency in communication, both oral and written.
  • Computer knowledge including Word, Publisher, and Excel.

The Lincoln office of the Great Plains United Methodist Conference is seeking applications for the position of Administrative Assistant for Clergy Excellence. This position will be responsible for detailed record keeping and managing processes in accordance with specific timelines.  There will also be development of projects and work plans for the Registrar and Associate Director of Clergy Excellence to bring critical tasks to a well organized and successful conclusion.  Excellent communication skills are also required.
 
The needed skills are proficiency in computer programs as Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Shelby Systems; web site management skills are also required. Proficiency is also needed in drafting and editing written material and correspondence as well as project development and organization. 3-5 years experience and Associate degree or equivalent is preferred.
