Praying for and with college campuses

From Aug. 23 through Oct. 1, The Foundation for Evangelism, College Union, The Upper Room, The General Board of Higher Education and Ministry and United Methodist Communications, invite you to join in prayer for the millions of students returning to campus this fall. Over these 40 days, you are invited to be in prayer for the college campuses and students even as campus ministers will be working with students to teach them how to pray.

The prayers were written by campus ministers, bishops, college students, authors, pastors and other leaders. Collectively, these prayers express a heart for God to inspire, challenge and transform the lives of college students and ministries on college campuses.

Cat-Hawk Challenge planned

The Fourth Annual Cat-Hawk Challenge will be Saturday, Oct. 9, 2010, at Grace United Methodist Church, Olathe. Hear about what God is doing at the University of Kansas and Kansas State University through the United Methodist Church. Wear your school colors and raise the most money for United Methodist campus ministry at your favorite school.

Ichabod-Hornet challenge a success

The first ever Ichabod-Hornet Challenge to raise money for the campus ministries at Washburn University and Emporia State University was a success. Plans are underway to have the event in 2011 in Emporia.

Events planned for fall at ESU Campus Ministry

Planning a visit to Emporia State this fall? Be sure to stop by the United Methodist Campus Ministry center. The UMCM center will host a tailgate event prior to the ESU Homecoming Football game Oct. 23. The tailgate will begin at 11:30 a.m. and wrap-up in time for kick-off.

Rev. Kurt Cooper, campus minister, is available to visit and preach at your local church. Contact him at umcmesu@yahoo.com.

Students wear many shirts at Fort Hays Campus Ministry

People who are very busy are often said to wear many different hats. At the Fort Hays State University Campus Ministry Center, instead of wearing lots of different hats, the students wear a lot of different t-shirts that represent their many activities at the center and the community.

Residential community opens at K-state Wesley

Fifty-four new mattresses are in place, waiting for students to move in to the new living space at K-State Wesley. With a little advice from K-State’s Housing and Dining Services officials and lots of volunteer help, the new residence hall is ready for occupancy. Campus Minister Mike Toluba is excited to start the semester. A retreat is planned for Sept. 10-12 at Rock Springs Ranch.

Changes at Kansas Wesleyan University

New Kansas Wesleyan President Fletcher Lamkin has reassigned John Blackwell to vice president of student development. While Blackwell will remain dean of the chapel, Rev. Mike Rose, pastor at University United Methodist Church, will assume responsibilities as university chaplain.

Rose will lead campus ministry alongside Professors Brad Anderson and John Burchill and Dr. Dave Kraemer. The four will have oversight of several ministry activities.

The Calling is a weekly student-led Bible study and fellowship group led by Meriah Forbes and Cody Haviland. Students also participate in mission projects throughout the academic year. Rose also will assist Blackwell with planning and leading Chapel services on campus.

Pittsburg University Campus Ministry welcomes students

The United Methodist Campus Ministry at Pittsburg State University is excited to welcome new and returning students this fall. Offerings include Bible Study, worship, and free lunch on Wednesdays. For more information, stop by the center at 201 E William.

Campus Ministry Kick-off at Southwestern

Chapel is one of the first things new Moundbuilders at Southwestern get to experience. A “Farewell Chapel” leads students into their freshmen orientation and moms and dad get one last chance to hug their son or daughter goodbye on the day that new freshmen move into their residence halls.

The rest of the campus returns on Sunday and are greeted with a “Welcome Back” chapel. We are excited for weekly opportunities to gather as a community in worship and fellowship for the year ahead.

The chapel theme for 2010-2011 is “Commitment Issues: living a life of absolute devotion” and we will have guest speakers from the campus and community share about ways to grow deeper in one’s faith.

We are also having a focus on prayer within our community this fall. Students will be joining in with students of other campuses to pray specific prayers for the first 40 days of new school year, but are also committing to pray for the campus through the school year. We would love to invite others to join us in prayer this year by going here: www.sckans.edu/pray40. Check out our campus ministry activities here: www.sckans.edu/ministry.
