Question:  How do I find out the Mosaic Types for my area?  And, once I find the Mosaic Types what do I do with that information?

Answer:  As always, you must define your geography in order to retrieve any demographic information from the MI System.   Once your geography is chosen (radius drawn, polygon drawn, zip code chosen, regional boundary chosen etc.) you may create a QuickInsite, ExecutiveInsite or FullInsite predefined report for your selected geography.  These reports include the Mosaic Types in your geographic area (in addition to many other valuable data variables.)  OR you can "Build Report" and choose the variables on your own.  Mosaic is the very last choice under "Overview."

Click the check box for Mosaic and click "Get Reports" located on the right side of the selection window.

A new window will open and you will see your Mosaic Types:

Mosaic from BAR

Now, what do you do with this information?  They key is to access the reference guides to Mosaic.  They can be found when you are logged into the system.  "Mouse-Over" the word HELP in the upper left hand side of your screen.  You will see a sub-menu pop down.  Choose DOCUMENTS.  All of the Mosaic reference materials are located on this menu.  You will find 4 resources to assist you.

  1. MI Demographic Segments Guide: Quick Look: This document provides a one page summary of each of the 60 Mosaic Types.  Use this guide when you want a quick reference for any of the 12 Mosaic groups or 60 indivudual Mosaic types.
  2. MI Demographic Segments Guide: Detail Look:  This 1000 page document provides extensive detail (approximately 18 pages) for each of the 60 Mosaic types.  HINT: Use the page outline feature in Adobe PDF Reader to find the desired type.
  3. Interactive Multimedia Guide to Mosaic USA by Experian:  This is an online guide to Mosaic that can only be opened in Internet Explorer version 5 or higher.
  4. Mission Impact Guide:  Our newest resource that is a guide to ministry applications by Mosaic Type.

Mission Impact
is a concise summary of ministry applications for each of the 60+ lifestyle types described by Mosaic research. The ministry applications presented originally emerged from Tom Bandy's over 35 years of ministry leadership among three denominations, and in multiple regions, contexts, and cultures in North America. This experience has included national denominational leadership, and over 15 years consulting with churches across the cultural, denominational, and theological spectrum in the United States and Canada. These applications have been tested and refined with numerous Christian leaders (ordained and lay) from diverse congregations, church plants, denominations, and agencies.

"Mission Impact Guide" Offers Local Church Ministry Ideas!

Now that you have your demographic report containing Mosaic household "lifestyle portraits" what do you do next?  How will your church leaders determine the best way to connect with the unique households in your community?  That's where the "Mission Impact Guide" developed by Tom Bandy in partnership with MissionInsite, offers an exciting start to ministry planning.

Mission Impact is a concise summary of ministry applications for each of the 60+ lifestyle types described by Mosaic research. It is specifically designed for local church and denominational planning, and for the faith-based non-profit agencies that are accountable to them. The Mosaic description is provided for each lifestyle type, followed by the ministry applications.

A "Lifestyle type" is an interpretation of demographic information that describes the habits, tastes, and preferences...and the needs, issues, and concerns...of groups of people in your mission field. Mission Impact provides brief guidelines for ministry applications for each type described by Mosaic research.

The primary use of the ministry application guidelines is:

  • To help you select and train leaders, design hospitality and worship, adjust educational strategies, focus affinities for small groups, and target outreach projects.

The secondary use of ministry application guidelines is:

  • To help you design advertising and marketing strategies, upgrade facilities and technologies, and multiply fund raising opportunities.

To download your copy of the "Mission Impact Guide" log in to your MissionInsite study area, then mouse over "Help" on the gray menu ribbon located just under the MissionInsite logo on the upper left of your map screen.  Select "Documents" and then "Mission Impact Guide."
