SUMMARY:World Malaria Day
DESCRIPTION:World Malaria Day is April 25. Use this new church bulletin
insert to bring awareness to this day and what United Method
ists are doing to combat this preventable but often deadly i
 llness.EVERY 60 SECONDS, MALARIA CLAIMS A LIFE IN AFRICA — Y
ET IT IS A PREVENTABLE DISEASE.Imagine No Malaria aims to al
ter this statistic by enriching the quality of life for mill
ions of families across Africa and supporting programs that
target at-risk populations like children and pregnant women.
Since 2010, your gifts have sent thousands of community heal

SUMMARY:Clergy Retreat Series with the Center for Pastoral Effective
 ness
DESCRIPTION:The 12th Kansas Center Retreat Series from the Center for Pa
storal Effectiveness starts August 12-14 in Great Bend. To r
egister simply email Bill Selby at integrity4u@comcast.netRe
commendations from Kansas pastors:"The Center for Pastoral E
ffectiveness saved my life. Our second retreat gathering cam
e after significant personal losses in my life that were dee
ply affecting my ability to minister effectively. The Center
helped me come back to emotional and spiritual balance and
gave me new a light for ministry. It gave me concrete tools
for leading with hope and being a non-anxious presence even
in the midst of my grief. I am forever grateful for this lif
 e-changing experience."Junius Dotson, Senior Pastor, Saint M
ark UMC, Wichita"The Center is a place to be real, human, an
d genuine. Much of ‘Church’ is about an agenda driven by som
eone's or some group's anxiety. The Center is a place where,
in trusted dialogue with others, I can explore and express
my own differentiated self and learn to be more authenticall
y present with others. When I first connected with the Cente
r, it saved my tail in a time of high anxiety in ministry an
d the Church I was serving. I am grateful to Bill Selby and
peers for that experience. In subsequent Center experiences,
when I and the Church were less anxious, it served to help
me be more authentically myself. Is it worth the distance? W
ithout a doubt. Worth the distance. Worth the money. Worth t
he commute. Most of all it is worth my time. That's not true
of everything I do in ministry. It is true of the Center fo
r Pastoral Effectiveness. I recommend it to you.”Michael Gar
dner, Senior Pastor, Old Mission UMC, Kansas CityThe Center
for Pastoral Effectiveness of the Rockies is a series of six
retreats over 18 months designed to improve pastoral effect
iveness through a process designed to maintain ministers in
ministry. Utilizing Systems Thinking, participants learn how
to become more well-differentiated leaders, with greater cl
arity about goals, and less likely to become lost in the anx
ious, emotional processes which naturally occur in ministry.
Systems Thinking is not just jargon, but a journey, a postmo
dern way of perceiving things and move to the deepest level
of emotional process and greatest level of leadership.A mini
ster maintains vitality in ministry in direct proportion to
his or her own feeling of effectiveness, irrespective of the
criteria by which that effectiveness is measured. Pastoral
ministry is deeply influenced by one's person self-definitio
n or self-differentiation which is deeply affected by the am
ount of stress on your life. The 12th Kansas Center will beg
in August 12-14 in Great Bend.Repeated quotes from others wh
o have attended the center include "I wish I had had this 20
years ago, it would have saved me, my family and my churche
s a lot of grief and stress, and made my ministry more enjoy
able” and “This has been my most valuable continuing educati
on experience.”Retreats are lead by Bill Selby who is the Ce
nter's mentor and the creator of the Center for Pastoral Eff
ectiveness of the Rockies. His background includes engineeri
ng, education and pastoral ministry (United Methodist). He h
as been a follower of Family Systems since the '70s. He has
served all sizes of churches and has a deep understanding of
the exciting, yet stressful, dynamics to the call to minist
ry.140 contact hours or 14 CEUs will be offered for the retr
eats.To read more about Bill Selby, The Center, the full Cen
ter Proposal, and recommendations of participants go to www.

and empower women through economic development, including mi
cro-enterprise training. Adults aged 18 and older are welcom
e on these trips. The October team will fly to Lilongwe, the
capital of Malawi, where they will be briefed by a United M
ethodist missionary before making the two hour drive to thei
r lodge in Madisi. They will worship with the Madisi UMC con
gregation in the church built by Church of the Resurrection
and share a meal with them, then return to their lodge to be
gin an economic empowerment training program designed to pro
vide basic business skills to Malawian entrepreneurs. Follow
ing the three day training, the team will visit the other ch
urches in the Madisi circuit and share a farewell meal with
the congregation, and have an opportunity to meet pastor's c
hildren who are receiving scholarships through a partnership
between Beyond Kansas City Missions and the Church of the R
esurrection Foundation. They will then visit the Malawi UMC'
s farm about two hours east of Lilongwe, spending the day th
ere. To expand the experience, cultural days have been added
to the trip. The team will visit the Apartheid Museum as we
ll as experience an overnight safari in Plainsburg National
Park. While in Malawi you will have the opportunity to meet
people who truly know what it means to rely on God for their
daily bread, to build lasting relationships with the Madisi
community, and to experience the unforgettable worship of o
ur African brothers and sisters.  The music and dancing is t
oo contagious to ignore.  You will see the beautiful country
side and experience “The Warm Heart of Africa.”  The people
of Malawi are proud of this nickname and the fact that their
country has never been involved in a war.  You will have th
e opportunity to experience a very simple lifestyle, and wil
l return with a new understanding of what it means to have p
 lenty.
