The congregation currently worships in the gym at West Indianola Elementary, until they get the new sanctuary built at 46th and Button Road in Topeka.
The ceremony included prayer, song, scripture readings, a message from Pastor Justin Jamis, the presentation of the warranty deed to the property by Rev. Kent Melcher, responsive readings led by Topeka District Superintendent Rev. Evelyn Fisher and shovels of dirt turned.
The first to turn the dirt was a trio of representatives from the Building Committee, Administrative Council and Finance Committee.
Children, youth, current and former pastors, those who were active at time of the groundbreaking for former building at 5919 Glenwood and the newest members of the church all had a turn at the shovels. Anyone who wished to turn a shovel was welcomed after the close of the ceremony.
