Certified Lay Ministers

Bridges to the Future

Currently, there are two programs for equipping lay ministers:

Certified Lay Ministry program
Carl Ellis oversees the Certified Lay Ministry program for both the Kansas East and Kansas West conferences.

Kansas East Conference Commissioned Lay Speaker program
The Commissioned Lay Speaker program originated as an educational program to train laity to serve in a temporary pastoral role. The Kansas East Board of Laity developed a three-level training approach. Persons could complete the first and second level training to become Certified Lay Speakers, or they could complete all three levels of training and become a Commissioned Lay Speaker (CLS).

The CLS candidates are required to complete seven courses within a three-year period. They will have the opportunity to include their name in a pool of people, which the District Superintendents may draw from to supply small church situations.

No person who completes the courses will be guaranteed an assignment.

The customary March and October seminars will include all 3 levels of training. The January and May seminars include only the 3rd CLS level training, however, local and certified Lay Speakers interested may attend for the Advanced credit.

The Lay Speaking Ministries courses offer an excellent opportunity

  • To identify our call to the ministry;
  • To develop skills in caring, leading and communicating;
  • To become informed about what we, as United Methodists, believe;
  • To discover our gifts and areas of interest in which we might serve Christ;
  • To offer opportunities to speak to other lay speakers about opportunities of service.
