Oswego: Mason Chapel UMC

History

In April 1879 a few people, mainly from the south, met and organized Second Methodist Episcopal Church.  A lot at the corner of Second and Indiana was purchased from Mr. Henry Smiley.  A two-story building was bought and moved onto the lot.  The first floor was for church services and the second floor was the parsonage, which was removed in a later remodeling.  The first Sunday School was organized in 1880 with Mr. George Winn as the first superintendent.

Several years later the church burned.  There was a small insurance policy so it was decided to build a new church.  When the new church was completed a dedication ceremony was held.  At the close of the celebration the Mason's set the cornerstone.  Later the name of the church became Mason Chapel Methodist Episcopal Church.

For several years the ladies of the church cooked and served dinners and some of the youth of the community put on programs and concerts to help with the cost of the new church.  Finally it was paid for and the mortgage burned.

In 1994 Mason Chapel voted to join the Agape Parish.  With the help of friends, family and Agape Parish churches, they have a new roof and beautifully remodeled sanctuary.
